Prime minister of Nepal committed to incorporate food Sovereignty as fundamental right of the people in coming constitution of Nepal
On the occasion of the 29th world food day a Seminar on "situation of Right to Food in Nepal and State's obligations" was organized successfully by The National Network on Right to Food, Nepal. The chief guest of the program was Rt. Hon'ble Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal. The glorious program was held in auditorium hall of tourism board. Members from different organizations of the Network including ANPFa, S AAPE, RTFN, FECOFUN, Action Aid, survivor of the violation of right to food and others participated the programme in that packed hall.
The speaker of the seminar discussed on the present situation of right to food in Nepal and showed the importance of ensuring Food Sovereignty and right to food in new constitution.
The program was chaired by Dr. Sarba Raj Khadka from SAAPE. Presenting brief highlights on "situation of right to food and state obligations" Mr. Prem Dangal, secretary general ANPFa, pointed out the poor condition of right to food in Nepal and concluded that agrarian reform, peasant right and right to food can only be insured by constitutional ising food sovereignty as the right steps for the solution of increasing problem.
Sensitizing the issue, representative of the survivors of the violation of right to food, Mr. Jagadis Bdr. Singh Yadav, said that the unequal treaties and Indian expansionism are the two main reason of violation of right to food in Nepal. He also added that despite the struggle of the victim and the voice raised by youth, peasant and civil society the government is turning its deaf ear to the problem. He warned the government that "if we have to come to street with nation wide protest to awake the Government we are also ready for this too". Another speaker Ms. Sharmila Karki, General Secretary of NGO federation of Nepal, mentioned that within the marginalized, ethnic and even Dalits group women are the main victim due to gender discrimination. Then, Right Honorable Prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, while addressing inaugural of program, expressed that situation of right to food in Nepal is not satisfactory. He also expressed that he is committed to ensure the concept of food sovereignty in the new constitution of Nepal. Mr. Gauri Pradhan, Hon'ble member of National Human Right Commission,Nepal stated that since right to food is the primary and fundamental right of people, unless we ensure this right, the human right cannot be ensured. Guest speaker Mr. Mrigendra Kumar Singh Yadav, Honorable minister for agriculture and cooperatives also expressed the need of reforming the agricultural policy to solve the problem. The seminar ended with a thanks speech by Mr. Sarba Raj Khadka, chairperson.
Earlier Ms Basudha high lighted the RtF network, Nepal. The packed hall was criss-crossed often by press and media persons.
